As a homeowner, it can be confusing to know whether or not the dead patch of grass in your yard is lawn disease, but we’re here to help.

Lawn disease is an ailment that can attack and infect your grass and plants. This can make your yard look dead and ugly; far from the luscious green lawn, you imagined all winter. Today, we’re taking a closer look at some of the most common lawn diseases and how to combat them.

Brown Patch

Brown patch is a fungal disease that affects grass during hot and humid months. This disease shows up in a circular shape that feels dry and rough. If a brown patch is active on your lawn for a long time, the center of the patch might begin to grow back, creating a dry and rough ring in your yard. You can eradicate this by watering on a schedule, mowing high, fertilizing properly, and applying fungicide.

Red Thread

Red thread looks like red hairs growing out of your lawn and can last for years if the disease isn’t eliminated. Red thread is typically found in soil lacking in nutrients and in places with cool and humid climates. The Pacific Northwest is a common area for this type of lawn disease. Red thread is mainly harmless and can be a good indicator that you need to fertilize your lawn again.

Snow Mold

Snow mold happens after a lawn has been covered by snow for an extended time. Once the snow begins to melt in the early spring, snow mold can begin to rear its ugly head. This lawn disease can also appear in grass that has been covered by wet leaves for a lengthy time. There are two types of snow mold: gray and pink. Pink can be more dangerous to plants because it infects the crown (where the plant and the root meet). Gray mold only infects the leafy part of the plant.

Rust

Rust diseases usually appear in the fall and in shady and low ventilated areas. This disease leaves green or yellow patches across the yard. If you investigate further, you’ll little orange rust spores on the blades of grass. If your lawn wasn’t fertilized properly, this problem can appear in the early spring. It’s important to provide consistent lawn care year-round to help combat any rust disease that may appear.
