Dangerous pests around our home might make us want to curl up and hide under our covers instead of going door to door collecting candy.

When you think of the creepy-crawlies, you probably picture the spooky ghosts, fake spider webs, and warty witches that come around every October. Unfortunately, for some homeowners the creepy-crawlies take on a much more realistic meaning.

For homeowners from Lehi to Spanish Fork, Utah, these common house pests can be extra spooky.

Spiders

While plastic spiders on big white webs are a fun way to celebrate Halloween, nobody wants to see a real spider on a big web anywhere near their home. All varieties of spiders are a nuisance, but there are a handful of poisonous spiders that are very common in Utah County.

Black widow spiders have earned their name in that their bites are extremely poisonous and can be deadly to young children and older adults. Wolf spiders, hobo spiders, and brown recluse spiders are also poisonous but don’t usually cause severe symptoms unless the bite causes an allergic reaction.

The good news is that spiders usually only bite when they are aggravated, so if you find a poisonous spider in your home, call a pest control professional right away. These experts are certified in handling dangerous pests, which is a safer option than trying to kill it yourself and risking a bite.

Wasps and Hornets

These stinging pests usually nest in tight spots outdoors. They hide their nests under porches, inside benches, in hollow trampoline poles, and under the eves of the roof. They are easily aggravated, and their stings pack a punch, posing a real danger to those with allergies to bees, wasps, or hornets.

If you locate a wasp or hornet nest near your home it is not recommended that you attempt to remove it on your own, as this can be extremely dangerous. Pest control professionals in Orem and the surrounding Utah County areas can remedy your pest problems safely without putting you at risk of getting stung.

Ants

Though most types of ant are more of a nuisance than a real danger, these ants that can be found in Utah County areas can cause major problems. Fire ants usually stay outside but their bites can cause serious reactions and even death on rare occasions. Black carpenter ants burrow into wooden frames of houses and weaken the structures. They are attracted to sugary substances and often come indoors to find food, contaminating food stores inside of the home.

Note: If you are exhibiting signs of allergic reactions to any bites or stings, seek medical attention immediately as allergic reactions can be deadly.
