Hummingbirds are one of the small joyous creatures that can grace your yard and show off their bright and vibrant colors.
One of the beauties of having your yard to care for is enjoying the wildlife that inhabit it also. Here are a few ways you can attract hummingbirds to your yard this year.
About Hummingbirds
Hummingbirds are small birds known by their speedy flight and agility beyond their beautiful appearance. If you live in North America, you may have seen the popular species known as the Ruby Throated Hummingbird or the Rufous Hummingbird. Of the 360 plus hummingbird species alive, only 15 of them thrive in the U.S. Hummingbirds are very smart and have a tremendous memory. They can remember feeders they have visited as well as certain flowers they have been to. Here are ways you can make your yard more memorable so that your tiny hummingbirds will come back to visit again and again.
Hang Hummingbird Feeders
Often, if you hang a hummingbird feeder in your yard, you will see an increase in hummingbirds that visit. The best time to hang your feeder is March through October. When choosing your feeder, select one that is red. Hummingbirds are most attracted to the color red and will make your feeder a home away from home more frequently. Look for a feeder that is easy to clean. You do not need a large feeder if you are only seeing a few birds visit. Take both points into account and find a feeder that is easy to maintain and also fits the capacity of hummingbirds visiting.
Plant Bright Flowers
Planting flowers that are bright colors will attract the most hummingbirds to your yard. Pick flowers that are red, pink, purple, and orange in color. If these flowers are trumpet or tube shaped, even better.
Make Hummingbird Nectar
You can make your own hummingbird nectar at home. The easiest way to do this is to add sugar and water together in a 1:4 ratio. Make sure to wash out your feeder every time you refill it.
Install Bird Baths
This tip might be one you have never heard of. All birds need water to bathe and drink and Hummingbirds are no different. Since Hummingbirds are so small, they prefer shallow water rather than large saucers or dishes of water. Larger birds might occupy your water features with more water and deter smaller hummingbirds from coming to bathe. All in all, they do love to play in the water and will choose to if the conditions are right.
