You have probably seen the scruffy little garden gnomes in yards or gardens near you. In fact, you may even own some!

What you probably haven’t seen is their vast history and what magic they can actually bring to the grass they call home. They come in all shapes and sizes, looks, and colors. We are delving into all-things garden gnomes in today’s blog. You don’t want to miss this!

History of Garden Gnomes

You can track these curious gnomes all the way back to the nineteenth century in Germany. They originally had a different name and were called “Gartenzwerg.” Their name later changed in the 1930s to what we now call “Gnomes.” Garden gnomes also bring a history of good luck and protection upon the lives and lawns of individuals who house them.

Gnome Magic

These little creatures are named for their ability to live underground and move swiftly through the dirt. It is believed that garden gnomes are indeed magical creatures that spring to life in the moonlight and then turn to stone in the sunlight.

Make and Style of Garden Gnomes

Garden gnomes were originally made out of terra cotta and then kiln fired. After drying, they were then hand painted in many different unique styles and colors. Since they have now become a more popular lawn ornament, they are mass produced in China and Poland.

Types of Gnomes

When you see gnomes sitting pretty in someone’s garden, you might find a few things in common between them. Male gnomes will always have a red cap on. You will also always see more male gnomes than female ones. Generally, there are a few different categories of gnomes you will find. These can vary from worker gnomes and gnomes on mushrooms, to cultural gnomes, at ease gnomes, popular media gnomes, and musical gnomes. They come in all shapes and sizes, ranging from miniscule to life-size.

What Are These Gnomes Like?

If you ever find yourself among the few who have had the pleasure of meeting a gnome while they are awake in the moonlight, you might find out a thing or two. First off, gnomes are vegetarian. Their diets consist of foods such as beans, mushrooms, applesauce, peas, and potatoes. They can live up to 400 years! And they kiss and shake hands by rubbing each other’s tiny noses.
