Planning the Perfect Garden
Every person who’s passionate about their plants and vegetables will tell you that a garden is always a work in progress. Even the most beautiful ones require tweaking from season to season. If you carefully plan before you plant, your yard will flourish beyond harvest season. Part of your planning is selecting the proper tools to get the job done.
Here’s our top five list of must-have supplies.
1. Shovel or Spade
Two of the most important tools you can own are a spade or shovel. However, if we had to choose between the two, we would choose the spade. This tool can give your garden straight, nice, clean edges. Furthermore, it’s perfect for planting, transplanting, and cutting through tangled roots.
Some people prefer using a shovel to dig holes and scoop soil. No matter which one you go with, make sure it feels comfortable in your hands and that it has a sturdy handle and a razor-sharp cutting edge.
2. Gloves
It’s impossible to achieve the perfect garden without owning a few pairs of nitrile-coated gloves. This material provides dexterity, so you’ll be able to pick up seeds with ease. They also come with knit backs to keep your hands cool when temperatures rise, and they’re machine washable.
Sadly, these gloves aren’t warm enough for cold-weather gardening. We recommend investing in a pair of lined waterproof work ones.
3. Pruning Shears
Call them what you want—pruning shears, secateurs, or hand pruners—these are a toolbox essential to prune roses, shrubs, fruit trees, vegetables, and more. For general use, we prefer using bypass pruners, which can cut live wood using smooth, clean cuts.
Every experienced gardener will tell you that pruning can get monotonous, so it’s crucial to pick shears that fit your hands comfortably. Remember to sharpen your blade roughly every three months.
4. Weeder
Ah, weeds—the bane of all gardens! A sturdy weeding tool is essential for controlling weeds before they take over your yard. A soil knife is great for digging them up, but you can’t go wrong with a cape cod weeder. Cape cod weeders are most effective for trimming weeds below the surface.
Do you have chronic pain or mobility issues? You can count on a long-handled weeder so that you don’t need to bend or kneel.
5. Hose
The best way to keep your plants happy is by watering them. Let’s face it; if your yard is large and you want to adorn it with various plants, then using a watering can may not be practical. We recommend using a hose with an adequate length to reach all your flower beds and vegetable patches.
